# Dorset - bring Luna

This is the easiest journey and strongest all-round branch: Jurassic Coast scenery, a castle, heritage railway, dog-friendly garden and robust indoor options. Its dairy content is deliberately modest: a public farm vending stop and local cheese purchases, not a tour or invented tasting.

Nothing is booked. The Airbnb was observed with the exact dates, three guests and one pet.

## Stay and sleeping

Use **Enchanting Manor Coach House, Martinstown**, observed at **£1,258 total**. It publishes two king bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, parking and pets allowed. One adult and Luna use one king; the other adult and Ada use the second. The garden is not fully fenced, so Luna remains securely led. Recheck the exact party/pet total, full rules and cancellation before payment; free cancellation was displayed before 5 August.

## Each day

### Friday - travel and settle

Leave Ely around 09:00, use a live charge/meal stop and expect arrival around 14:00-15:00. Buy breakfast supplies, take a short village walk and use a simple apartment dinner or named takeaway. Do not create an arrival attraction.

### Saturday - Corfe Castle or the independent local day

Leave around 09:15 for roughly 45 minutes each way. Directly confirm 2027 dog access, then use the interpreted ruins and a **maximum 75-minute / roughly 2.5 km out-and-back** on the signed Corfe Common path. Turn after 35 minutes, treat uneven grass/mud and livestock as the route check, and keep Luna on a short lead. Have a picnic or dog-compatible village lunch. If the common route is not clearly usable, the castle interpretation plus Corfe village/lunch is the complete lower-load day; do not improvise a longer circuit.

If shared dog access fails, use **Portland Castle** on Saturday as the intact interpreted castle: English Heritage currently welcomes dogs on short leads inside the castle, grounds, shop and lower tea-room section. Focus on Tudor architecture and harbour rather than the military audio. The rest of the week remains Sun Swanage, Mon Abbotsbury, Tue Durdle, Wed dairy/Sturminster and Thu Weymouth. If Corfe and Portland are both confirmed unavailable, use **Old Wardour Castle** as the shared castle after rechecking its 2027 opening and dog access. Leave about 08:30 for up to two hours each way, use the family trail and audio interpretation from roughly 10:30-13:30, and eat a carried picnic at a confirmed dog-compatible on-site picnic point. Leave by 14:00 and expect Martinstown about 16:00, preserving an easy house dinner, Luna's normal walk and Ada's bedtime. If the fresh route estimate exceeds two hours each way or safe conditions fail, do not use it. If all three castle options fail before payment, choose Somerset only after its complete Luna-care arrangements pass; otherwise choose eligible Cornwall under its own rules, or make no accommodation payment until one alternative is valid.

### Sunday - Swanage Railway

Leave about 09:00 for Norden, use a late-morning heritage train to Swanage, carry food or buy dog-compatible takeaway, walk the seafront and return by about 16:30. Dogs currently need a ticket, lead and floor position and cannot enter buffets/dining trains. Advance booking is recommended rather than essential: wait until the Saturday 18:00 forecast, then buy the Sunday or Tuesday Freedom ticket required by the selected weather sequence. Do not rely on changing a dated ticket.

### Monday - Abbotsbury, cream tea and anniversary

Leave around 10:00 for the 20-minute drive. Use Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens with Luna on a non-extendable lead until about 14:30. Have the proper cream tea at **Old Schoolhouse Tea Rooms**, named by the village guide; confirm Monday opening and dog seating by **6 July 2027**. If either fails, carry pre-bought Dorset scones, clotted cream and jam in the cool bag and eat them at a confirmed public dog-compatible picnic point rather than returning home.

Drive on to **West Bexington** around 15:00 for the cream-tea fallback if needed and a bounded dog-on-lead shore/view stop, then book **The Club House** for about **17:30**. It currently publishes Monday food service, but dog access and the public shore route remain direct checks due 6 July. The named dinner fallback is a preordered Club House collection eaten at the house. If collection is unavailable, use the **Kings Arms, Portesham** only after its Monday dog/table check. The Brewers Arms remains closed Monday and is not a lead. This continuous loop explains the day's 60-75 minutes of total driving and avoids a house-return-and-back gap.

### Tuesday - Durdle Door and Lulworth

Leave around 09:15 for roughly 35 minutes each way. Do not use the steep coast-path link between the two places. From the Durdle Door car park, use only the signed upper viewpoint out-and-back, capped at **2 km / 60 minutes**, turning sooner at steep, loose or crowded ground and never descending the beach steps. Drive separately to Lulworth, then use a level village/cove circuit capped at **1.5 km / 60 minutes**. The whole day is therefore at most 3.5 km and two hours of walking, with a sit-down picnic/café break between stops. Confirm public dog permission, heat, wind, crowds, paths and parking; keep Luna securely led. If poor, use the first unused weather backup below and drop Durdle unless the scenario table explicitly assigns it elsewhere.

### Wednesday - honest Dorset dairy and countryside

Leave around 09:30 for the **Woodbridge Farm/Dorset Blue milk and local-product vending area** near Sturminster Newton, about 55 minutes away. Confirm public access, parking and Luna's access before travel. Buy milk/cheese for a picnic; do not claim a tour, tasting or animal access. Use Dorset Council's **Walkabout 6: Old Railway/Fiddleford Mill**, a named two-mile route, only after direct confirmation of its current public access and dog rules; keep Luna led and use the picnic. Return by about 16:00.

If either the vending area or Walkabout 6 fails its shared-access check, buy Dorset Blue Vinny and Ford Farm Coastal during the ordinary grocery shop and use **Thorncombe Wood Local Nature Reserve** as the complete day: the council explicitly welcomes families and dog walkers and provides route leaflets, café and toilets. Choose a current signed visitor-centre loop capped at 90 minutes, have café/picnic lunch and return by mid-afternoon. In heavy rain, use the first unused weather backup; do not substitute house lunch or invent a factory visit.

### Thursday - Weymouth beyond military history

Leave around 10:00 for the short drive. Make dog-friendly **SandWorld** the main all-weather experience, have café/takeaway lunch, then use only Nothe Fort's tunnels and Ada-oriented highlights for 60-90 minutes if everyone wants them. Finish with a short signed dog-compatible Weymouth coast walk and return by about 16:00. If Nothe's dog rule changes, omit it; SandWorld plus Weymouth remains complete. From 16:00-17:00, pack and load everything except Friday breakfast, Luna's overnight kit and medicines; use a simple early house dinner, normal Luna walk and Ada's ordinary bedtime.

### Friday - home

Leave by 09:00, choose the charge/meal stop live and expect Ely around 14:00-15:00. Use the prepared freezer meal.

## If several days are poor

The severe-weather backups are **Swanage Railway**, **SandWorld**, **Portland Castle**, **Nothe/Weymouth**, **Durlston**, **Seaton Tramway**, **West Somerset Railway** and terminal **Beer Quarry Caves**. Use each once. Shaftesbury Abbey remains a mixed-weather option only because its ruins, garden and Gold Hill exterior do not make a severe-weather day. For West Somerset, allow about **1 hour 20 minutes each way** to Bishops Lydeard and use only an exact 2027 standard-service round trip to Watchet or Williton that leaves after 10:00 and returns to Bishops Lydeard by 15:30. Carry lunch or have one adult collect takeaway while the other stays with Luna; dogs cannot use buffet/catering carriages and station-café dog access is not assumed. This is an exceptional roughly 2 hour 40 minute driving day.

For **Durlston**, leave about 09:45 for roughly 50 minutes each way. Use the dog-welcome Castle visitor centre from about 11:00-14:15: the four-screen film, rock room, gallery and one current child trail, followed by a dog-compatible Castle café lunch. Add only a short surfaced viewpoint section if conditions allow and return by about 15:30. Recheck 2027 opening, trail and café dog access.

For **Seaton**, leave about 08:45 for roughly 1 hour 15 minutes each way. Park at the confirmed departure station and use an exact 2027 service after 10:00 with an enclosed lower-deck saloon, travelling the full Seaton-Colyton line and back without relying on an exposed upper deck. Allow a station/exhibition pause, carry lunch or have one adult collect takeaway while the other stays with Luna, and be back at the car by about 14:15 for a 15:30-16:00 return. Dogs are currently welcome at both stations and on lower decks, but café dog access is not assumed. Do not use the card if the published timetable or safe service cannot deliver that shape.

Beer Quarry Caves is the terminal low-load card after a late failure: allow about 1 hour 15 minutes each way, use a 10:30 dog-welcome guided tour, arrange a dog-compatible Beer lunch for about 12:15 and return by 15:00. Before accommodation payment, ask when the 2027 diary opens and obtain the cancellation/transfer terms. As soon as inventory opens, hold **Thursday 12 August at 10:30** on a flexible rate; if only a non-refundable booking is available, count its full family price inside the activities allowance as a potentially unused safety hold. A failure earlier in the week advances other unused cards while Beer remains Thursday; a Thursday failure uses the held slot. Cancel only by the verified deadline once it is no longer needed. If Seaton or West Somerset is Thursday, pre-pack Wednesday and use the timetable needed to return by 17:15. If Beer is Thursday, return by 15:00 and load 16:00-17:00. Recheck every 2027 timetable before payment.

If a sustained poor-weather block is visible before travel, use the applicable sequence. Confirm Durlston, Seaton, West Somerset and the held Beer slot before the cutoff; silence retains current recurring assumptions and confirmed failure removes a card. One late failure advances West Somerset while preserving Beer for Thursday, or uses Beer directly if it occurs Thursday. If two independent cards fail only after commitment and even Beer is consumed, use one deliberate recovery/packing day after the run of outings: keep the family together at the house with stocked meals and Ada's brought activity kit, take only short safe Luna toilet walks, and do not attempt another long drive in dangerous weather. This is the final safety fallback, not a routine weather alternative. Before payment, insufficient cards select only an eligible alternative plan.

## Meals and cost

Breakfasts are at the house. Lunches: Corfe/local picnic; railway takeaway; Abbotsbury café/cream tea; Durdle picnic; Dorset cheese picnic; Weymouth café/takeaway. Other dinners are cooking or named takeaway, with Monday the main sit-down meal.

Before paying: recheck official school dates and the Airbnb; confirm Corfe/Common, Portland, Old Wardour, Durdle, Woodbridge/Walkabout and Thorncombe; check Swanage's delayed ticket; confirm cream tea/meal; and recheck Abbotsbury, SandWorld, Nothe, mixed-weather Shaftesbury, Durlston, Seaton and West Somerset, including the exact rail segments and Luna-compatible food. Ask Beer Caves for its 2027 diary and terms, then hold the Thursday 10:30 slot as specified. Any Somerset switch requires completed Luna care.

Bring Luna's lead/harness, bed setup, bowls, towels, food and Apoquel; Ada's self-contained activity kit; walking shoes; coastal layers and sun protection; swim kit; picnic kit/cool bag; ordinary medicines; chargers; and freezer meals for home.
